Building Brands That People Belong To: Part 3

The Conscious Growth approach to closing the purpose gap

We have identified the issue. Only 33 percent of employees experience purpose at work, even though purpose is the strongest driver of engagement.

We have identified the mechanism. Leaders are the bridge between stated purpose and lived experience.

So the question becomes:

How do we close the gap? How do we build brands people not only work for, but genuinely belong to?

It requires a different way of thinking about growth.

The problem with short-term thinking

Most organisations focus on awareness and visibility. Campaigns. Social media. Marketing activity.

These things matter. People cannot choose you if they do not know you exist.

But when organisations focus only on awareness, without intentionally building connection and trust, growth becomes shallow and short lived.

Real growth comes from three simple, human-centred drivers:

  • Do people know about you? Awareness
  • Do they like you? Connection
  • Do they trust you? Trust

Most organisations prioritise the first, and neglect the second and third.

The Conscious Growth framework

The problem with short-term thinking

Our practice is built around a framework that addresses all three. Connection. Awareness. Trust. This approach has evolved from more than twenty years of working with purpose-driven organisations, helping them grow in ways that are genuine and sustainable.

Here is how it works.

1. Building Connection: Do they like you?

Connection is grounded in authenticity. It depends on knowing who you are and understanding the people you serve.

It requires two forms of awareness.

Self-awareness

Clarity on purpose, values and your real contribution to people’s lives. It is the foundation of consistent, meaningful brand behaviour.

Customer awareness

A deep understanding of the humans you serve. Their motivations, values and needs. Not personas. Real people.

When you combine both, you create a path where your purpose aligns with the needs and interests of your people.

Behavioural research, including work from Harvard and insights from Gallup, points to the same truth. Much of our behaviour and decision making is shaped below the surface by non conscious drivers. This is why connection work is essential. It builds brands that resonate emotionally and intuitively, not just rationally.

Connection is where purpose becomes real.

2. Building Awareness: Do they know about you?

Awareness is about visibility with integrity.

You cannot demand attention anymore. You have to earn it.

That means contributing value, not noise. It means sharing knowledge generously. It means being distinct in how you look, sound and behave so people remember you for the right reasons.

Awareness grows through consistent, conscious action. Not campaigns alone.

3. Building Trust: Do they trust you?

Trust is the hardest to build and the most powerful to hold.

It depends on three things.

Intent:

Your motive and whether people believe you truly want mutual success.

Integrity:

The alignment of belief, communication and behaviour.

Capability:

Your ability to learn, improve and deliver on your promises.

Gallup’s research shows that when people feel a strong sense of purpose, they are more likely to stay, more likely to recommend their workplace and more likely to go above and beyond in their role. Trust and purpose move together.

Trust turns brands into movements. It turns customers into advocates and employees into believers.

How we help: The Conscious Growth Partnership

The problem with short-term thinking

Closing the purpose gap is long-term work. It requires alignment between purpose, culture, leadership and brand experience.

Our Conscious Growth Partnerships help organisations:

  • Uncover authentic purpose and values
  • Embed purpose into culture and leadership
  • Grow through conscious, consistent action that builds awareness and trust
  • Measure progress through our Conscious Growth Index, which tracks self-awareness and how it translates into practice

Growth is not only about revenue. It is about impact. It is about building organisations where people feel connected, valued and purposeful.

The invitation

The purpose gap is real, but solvable.

It requires a shift in how we build brands. Beyond communications. Beyond campaigns. Towards conscious action, cultural alignment and human connection.

When organisations commit to conscious growth, they build more than awareness. They build belonging. They build trust. They build brands that contribute to people’s lives in meaningful, positive ways.

If you are ready to explore this work, start with our Brand Diagnostic or book a Brand Check-in to talk through what conscious growth could look like for you.

Because the world needs more purpose-led brands. Brands that are real, not performative. Brands people can belong to.

Let’s build one together.

This is part of a three-part series exploring the purpose gap and how organisations can close it for good. Continue reading to explore: Part 1, Part 2
